Queen Charlotte Sounds

Queen Charlotte Sounds

Walking the Queen Charlotte Track Shorter Walk Suggestions -
If time does not permit you to walk the entire Queen Charlotte Track choose from one of these highlights

Ship Cove to Endeavour Inlet and Camp Bay to Torea Bay - 2 day option.
Day 1:
Enjoy your boat ride from Picton, our usual travel time for the journey to Ship Cove is just under 1 hour. As we cruise out to the outer sounds, our skipper will give passengers an informative commentary on the sounds area and parts of the track you can see from the boat. Take some time to enjoy your visit to Ship Cove. Even today it still looks much as it did to Captain Cook when he first arrived there in 1770. You may like to take a short warm up walk to the twin waterfall behind Ship Cove before starting on the track. Recently Department of Conservation has done a lot of work here to show visitors the history of this site, accessible by boat only. Starting out from Picton on our morning departure will give plenty of time for a comfortable first day's walking to the head of Endeavour Inlet, where we suggest taking the afternoon boat transfer to the south west area camp bay where there is a variety of accommodation or camping options. This section of the Queen Charlotte Track is mostly through exceptionally beautiful forest, much of it extremely old.

Day 2:
This is another long day but the walking time through to Torea Bay is considerably less than many publications suggest. In fact most people manage this section quite comfortably in around the 6 ½ hours walking time (add on time for photo stops, lunch rest breaks) The views are just stunning so allow plenty of time for photos, A short side excursion to Eatwell's Lookout will reward you with a particularly breathtaking view.
Our boat will be at Torea Bay at 1600 pm to transfer you back to Picton.

Day 2:
It is worthwhile exploring the waterfall walk behind Furneaux Lodge (about 1 hour return walk) and perhaps having a fossick around the site of the late 18th century antimony mining township at the head of Endeavour Inlet (miners area).
Much of the track along the western shore of Endeavour Inlet traverses country which was farmed until the early 1960's. The forest is now regenerating well and the shore life, especially around Big Bay, adds yet another dimension to the Track experience.
Your walk ends at Punga Cove Resort in the south western corner of Endeavour Inlet. There is a afternoon boat transfer back to Picton.
