Day 1:
Enjoy
your boat ride out from Picton. Our usual travel time for
the journey to Ship Cove at the start of the Track is a bit
under 1 hour.
Most
of our boat skippers live out in the Sounds and know the area
very well. During the journey we do our best to give you an
informative commentary on the Sound and point out some of
the features of the Track which can be seen from the boat.
Take
some time to enjoy your visit to Ship Cove. Even today it
still looks much as it did to Captain Cook when he first arrived
there in 1770. You may like to take a short warm up walk to
the twin waterfall behind Ship Cove before starting on the
Track.
Starting
out from Picton on one of our morning departures will give
plenty of time for a comfortable first day's walking to either
Furneaux Lodge or Endeavour Resort & Fishing Lodge. Both
have a variety of accommodation and campgrounds.
This
section of the Queen Charlotte Track is mostly through exceptionally
beautiful forest, much of it extremely old.
If
you are starting out on the afternoon departure from Picton
you may prefer a shorter first day. Resolution Bay makes an
easy first night stop with camping and accommodation available.
This option is especially advisable for afternoon starts outside
of New Zealand Daylight Saving Time.
Day
2:
It
is worthwhile exploring the waterfall walk behind Furneaux
Lodge (about 1 hour return walk) and perhaps having a fossick
around the site of the late 18th century antimony mining township
at the head of Endeavour Inlet.
Much
of the Track along the western shore of Endeavour Inlet traverses
country which was farmed until the early 1960's. The forest
is now regenerating well and the shore life, especially around
Big Bay, adds yet another dimension to the Track experience.
This
section of the Track leads to the south western corner of
the Inlet for your second night. There is a campsite and a
variety of accommodation here.
Day
3:
This
is the longest day but the walking time through to the Portage
area is considerably less than many publications suggest.
In fact most people manage this section quite comfortably
in 6 1/2 hours walking time (add on for photo stops, lunch
etc).
The
views are just stunning so allow plenty of time for photo
stops. A short side excursion to Eatwell's Lookout will reward
you with a particularly breathtaking view.
At
the day's end there is a range of accommodation to choose
from or a campsite.
Day
4:
On
this last day the Track covers a variety of ground. There
are some wonderful views giving more good photo opportunities.
Mistletoe Bay is a nice place to stop for lunch and a swim.
The last section of the Track through to Anakiwa is easy walking
through beautiful beech forest.
There
is a coffee shop about 800 meters beyond the end of the Queen
Charlotte Track, within easy sight of the Tirimoana Wharf
which is where we collect you for transfer back to Picton.
